SYRINGE ART | 9 Images
A 1963 ski accident profoundly changed Erlich's life. She fell while skiing and broke two vertebrae in her neck. She was rushed to a hospital where she was in traction for six weeks. Literally unwilling to lay idle, she plotted with the nurses to create some art. First she got disposable syringes and filled them with watercolors. Then she had the nurses flip her traction bed face down and put paper on the floor. After her release from the hospital, Erlich created some of her finest watercolors and oils using that same technique. One painting from this series was purchased by the Hoffman LaRoche pharmaceutical company for their collection.
