Some of Erlich's early pen and ink drawings, such as Earth Becomes Sky, reflect experimentation with abstract forms that also appear in her print making. The 1962 lithograph, Three Faces, was originally commisioned by an art magazine. Both Three Faces and Rise Up Now My Love, reflect a sophisticated use of black and white to convey compex emotions through stark figures. Solomon's Song of Songs, created in stark reds and blues, show King Solomon's carnal appetite in full force. Another serigraph from that same period, Dispute, uses muted colors to show two Biblical figures back-to-back in a Talmudic-like standoff.
