Ruth Erlich was born in Philadelphia in 1918. As a young girl she moved to Los Angeles. Her earliest studies were with Burr Singer, learning the painting techniques of the old masters. In the 1950's, she studied lithography at Chouinard Art Institute; in the 1960's, serigraphy at Immaculate Heart College with Sister Corita Kent; and in the late 1980's, sculpture with Claire Falkenstein. For several decades, Erlich focused on sculpting in bronze, glass, welded steel, wood and marble. She would eventually travel from prints to sculpture, jewelry and then back to watercolor.
